Gain staging in your DAW the RIGHT way

How do you feel about gain staging within your DAW? Do you like to keep your faders at 0 and use clip gain to give you headroom or do you just pull down the faders? what about group tracks or VCA faders? Personally, I like to use a combination of all of them.

When i first started mixing, i would mix into a limiter (i still do) but i would push WAY too much level into my master bus and just destroy the dynamics of my mix. I'm much more careful now of how I approach gain staging in my DAW (Reaper) and my mixes have improved drastically.  Ok ever heard of a "Sweet spot" input level for plugins? Does anyone gain stage their tracks for this?  Here is my take on it
